Read and Understand Folktales & Fables, Grades 2-3
Teachers are always in need of additional reading practice materials. Provides teachers with a comprehensive resource of stories and skills pages to supplement any core reading program. Books contain from 21 to 23 stories, each followed by four or five pages of activities for practicing reading skills. Each of the stories are followed by activities for practicing reading skills such as: comprehension, vocabulary development, phonetic elements, and word attack skills. The stories and practice materials can be used for directed lessons with small groups or individual students or as independent practice activities in class or at home. The reading levels in each book span several grades to ensure that appropriate material for most all students is provided. A complete list of skills practiced is given in the table of contents for each book. An answer key is provided. Folktales and Fables contains 21 one and two page stories of varied reading difficulty. They are designed to meet a range of needs from beginning second through beginning fourth grade. There are retellings of familiar folktales such as The Frog Prince, The Shoemaker and the Elves, and the Four Musicians. There are lesser-known folktales such as The Monkey and the Crocodile, a tale from India, and The Tiger and the Big Wind, an African folktale. Seven Aesop's fables are included, among them The Sun and the Wind, A Bell for the Cat, and The Fox and the Stork. There are African, Indian, and Native American fables as well. Practice activities for every story include: a comprehension page, two or three pages for practice of skills such as : word meaning, phonetic elements (blends, vowel sounds, word families, rhyming), sequence of events, parts of speech, prefixes and suffixes, contractions, and compound words. 144 pages.
